The debate on whether the federal government should take the lead in deregulating the electric power industry may include room for compromise, an Energy Department official said yesterday.
Congressional proposals to end the electric utility industry's regulated monopoly by as soon as 2000 have stirred the Clinton administration to enter the fray, Douglas W. Smith, deputy general counsel for energy policy at the Energy Department, said at a conference sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers.
But how strong a role the administration should play in the deregulation process remains subject to internal debate, he said.
