In their article "Which Jesus?" (Nov. 4), Beverly Roberts Gaventa and Richard B. Hays present their conclusions from their collaborative work with other biblical scholars and theologians in the Identity of Jesus Project as a "scholarly consensus" in a way that strikes me as misleading, if not disingenuous. Although Gaventa and Hays are hardly indifferent to critical historical study, they clearly place a priori parameters on their conclusions, as the Jesus they identify conforms to what they regard as normative Christian faith.
