"We support efforts not to create a procedural promise, but to undertake the hard work and difficult decisions required to balance the federal budget," NLC President Mark Schwartz and Immediate Past President Greg Lashutka wrote to each member of the House and Senate last week as the Congress prepares to begin debate on a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution this week. Schwartz and Lashutka urged Congress to avoid approving such an amendment until Congress had made the real, hard decisions to actualIy balance the budget and inserted protections to prevent simply passing the buck on to cities and towns:
