California Gov. Pete Wilson yesterday endorsed a plan to build a new $1.5 billion, 10-lane bridge connecting Oakland and San Francisco.
Construction of the bridge could prompt bond issuance of up to $800 million and would take the place of a full overhaul of the existing Bay Bridge, damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
Paying for the estimated $1.3 billion of retrofitting has inspired a long-running political squabble. But Wilson's endorsement of the new plan could end that.
