Article: A rebirth for hand-tufted. (hand-tufted rugs)

DALTON, Ga. -- Hand-tufted rugs are enjoying a new life.

In the present incarnation, they come from India and started making an impact on the market about a year ago. At this January's International Area Rug Market, nearly every import house offered a hand-tufted product.

They bridge the price gap between machine-made polypropylene products, which usually retail under $200, and handknotted wool rugs, which often start around $1,000 for 6 by 9. At retail prices in the $299 to $499 range for 5 by 8 or 6 by 9, hand-tufted rugs offer a value story for retailers in every distribution channel.
