Introduction

Paved roads are repaired predominantly using a thin asphalt concrete overlay to improve structural capacity, ride quality, and skid resistance (Finn and Monismith 1984). The low initial construction costs of a thin asphalt concrete overlay are not likely to compromise its relatively short maintenance cycles and long service life. Joints and cracks in old pavements tend to reflect an overlay that has been subjected to excessive traffic volume and environmental factors that produce a high stress concentration at the tip of existing cracks, which, in turn, propagate through the asphalt overlay.
