Dec. 28--When the spotlight shined brightest, Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon didn't lose sight of his hometown.
The Hazleton native's journey to the top of one of Major League Baseball's most competitive divisions and on to the Fall Classic made national headlines and was selected by staff at the Standard-Speaker as the top story of 2008.
Maddon led the Rays through a "worst to first" transition, capturing the American League pennant with more than 90 wins.
