Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.(1) The majority of patients with COPD have long histories of tobacco smoking. This relationship is especially true for two subcategories of COPD -- chronic bronchitis and chronic pulmonary emphysema (CPE). In many patients,"chronic bronchitis and CPE occur together, however, emphysematous symptoms usually predominate.
