Dec. 29--The plight of the lesser prairie chicken is almost more about environmental pressures bearing down on the birds than about the birds themselves. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service earlier this month updated its list of candidate species eligible for protection under the Endangered Species Act. The status of the lesser prairie chicken was upgraded from an 8 to a 2. While that might only be a single step, according to Randy Rodgers, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Park's upland bird biologist, it is significant.
