Probably the most sustained and influential association between an opera librettist and a European court was that between Pietro Metastasio and the Austrian Habsburgs, which lasted from 1730 until the poet's death in 1782. The uses he made of allegory and spectacle in the glorification of his sovereigns and the moral instruction of their many offspring have been examined before, notably by Jacques Joly (Les Fetes theatrales de Metastase a la cour de Vienne [1731-1767; Clermont-Ferrand: Association des publications, 1978]).
