Dec. 30--1. The Kentucky Derby. Aiken-trained Eight Belles and Cowboy Cal ran in the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Eight Belles, who was trained in Aiken by Legacy Stable's Ron Stevens, placed second in the Run for the Roses. The filly broke down after finishing the race and was euthanized. Cowboy Cal finished ninth. 2. Eventers in the Olympics. Eventers and Aiken residents Phillip Dutton and Heidi White were selected to U.S. Olympic team. The U.S. Olympic eventing team placed seventh in the 2008 Olympics.
