It was a blistering hot afternoon in northern Cameroon in March 2008, a bit past three o'clock. We'd been on the eland since dawn, and I was hot and tired. But there was a big bull in the herd, so we had to keep going. The eland had watered, perhaps sixty in the group, at least four bulls, including one monster. Now they were standing in shade at the base of a hill across a too-open plain.
