Medvedev signs law extending powers of president and parliament and law on State Duma control over govt

MOSCOW. Dec 30 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a federal law amending the Russian Constitution, which extends the powers of the president and the State Duma, the Kremlin reported on Tuesday.

The law was passed by the State Duma on November 21, 2008 and approved by the Federation Council on November 26, 2008.

The law states that the president is elected for a period of six years and the State Duma is elected for a period of five years.
