The resurgence of Pitt football actually began last year.
In the Panthers' season finale, the 100th annual Backyard Brawl against second-ranked West Virginia, they salvaged a disappointing campaign with a shocking 13-9 upset of the previously unbeaten Mountaineers.
The loss derailed West Virginia's hopes for a berth in the BCS national championship game, and it provided a much-needed spark for the struggling Pitt program heading into the 2008 season.
