An independent water and power project planned by Ras al-Khaimah Investment Authority (Rakia) will use coal feedstock because of growing concern over the availability of gas in the region.
Rakia will issue a request for proposals for the emirate's first coal-fired power plant in February next year.
Ras al-Khaimah is one of several emirates in the UAE that are opting for coal instead of gas to use as feedstock for power plants. At a capacity of 500-600MW, the planned Mina Saqr I plant is the first phase of a complex that could ultimately house 4,000MW of coal-fired power-generation capacity.
