Feb. 17--At a time when other national retailers are struggling to find a place for themselves in the alluring but fickle New York City market, Sears Roebuck is hoping to show them how it's done.
By announcing last week that it plans to open two megastores and 30 specialty stores in the city, the Illinois-based retail giant thinks it can succeed where others have failed at selling New Yorkers on its suburban-based brand of shopping.
"Sears intends to bring its unique assortment of merchandise and services to urban areas," Arthur Martinez, Sears' chief executive, said last week.
If history is any guide, Sears faces a struggle.
