UXBRIDGE Barbara J. (Bates) Thews, 84, died Sunday, December 28, in the Lydia Taft House, following an illness. Her husband, Richard M. Thews, died in April. She is survived by a son, Peter Thews, of Northampton, MA; two daughters, Diane Thews-Miller, of Uxbridge, and Gail Melendy, of White River Jct., VT; and eight grandchildren. A son, Gary Thews, died in 2005.
Mrs. Thews was born, November 10, 1924, in Springfield, MA, the daughter of Stanley and Mildred (Read) Bates. She grew up in Springfield, and graduated from Springfield High School. She lived in Fort Pierce, Florida for 15 years, and 17 years in Needham, Ma, prior to moving here in 2006.
