NAMELESS and faceless - that is what characterises most commercial coffee traded on global commodity markets.
Most coffee is priced in relation to the New York "C" (The New York Coffee Exchange), with scant reference to country of origin, let alone the estate or varietal.
Diametrically opposed to this is The Cup of Excellence (COE) competition, which promotes excellence in coffee and recognises that each country is unique in terms of soil, crop and producer.
Each COE country holds its own event in which beans from the region are judged. There is little point in pitting Brazilian beans against Columbian beans. COE is ...
