In one of the first poems of grund genug (reason enough) Doris Runge asks, "who will return to us the images / or dreams / . . . the paths that may be walked / to the end / to a fork in the road / as if we had / a choice." These and similar lines express a longing for something lost, such as the freedom of choice, or, as she says in another poem, "perhaps / a white spot is / a view / an area / protected / from the insights / of old eyes."
