MOTORISTS are turning their backs on electricpowered cars in favour of high efficiency versions of mainstream models.

The number of people opting for electric cars in the UK halved in 2008, despite the Prime Minister's suggestion that all cars should be electric within a decade.

Their current fall from favour has been brought about by the incredible efficiency of models such as the Ford Focus ECOnetic, which averages more than 65mpg and has a low CO2 rating of way under the taxable 120g/km mark.
