On the night of 8 September 1715 a cadre of Scottish Jacobites attempted unsuccessfully to capture Edinburgh castle, the city's vital military installation. As Daniel Szechi relates, "Improvisation, enthusiastic amateurishness and spontaneity were the keynotes of the whole affair ...
