WASHINGTON--Feb. 27--A powerful House chairman Wednesday criticized the new plan by Newport News Shipbuilding and rival Electric Boat to build submarines together, suggesting he may try to derail the arrangement.
Less than 24 hours after the historic agreement was announced, Rep. Duncan Hunter, chairman of the National Security Subcommittee on Procurement, charged that allowing the two yards to work together rather than to compete will only drive up program costs.
"Eliminating competition in the submarine program can have a lot of implications," Hunter said.
