After a year of looking for land in East Texas, after many disagreements with my husband (I wanted this, he liked that) and after a firm commitment that we would not buy something (even if it was beautiful and seemed like the perfect place) that would put us in debt for the rest of our lives, we came across an ad in the paper that said "7 acres. Wooded. $5,600." My husband didn't even want to go look at it. He couldn't imagine any decent piece of land being that inexpensive.
It was a stormy day and I was bored so I badgered him enough and he finally gave in. We packed up our 9-month-old son, Ross, and off we went to East Texas to look at seven acres of woods.
