MARTIN BARRE, ARGUABLY ONE of the most important French painters of the second half of the 20th century, had only one U.S. solo show in his lifetime, but he exhibited widely during his years of professional production from 1955 until his death in 1993 at age 68. He may have a more unsettled reputation than most French painters of his generation, but Barre's paintings have nonetheless appeared with increasing regularity in museums, galleries, art fairs and alternative spaces across Europe, both in solo exhibitions and alongside the work of his contemporaries as well as--most importantly--younger artists.
