Mar. 7--Direct-marketing sales, which will be the mainstay of Harte-Hanks Communications Inc. in the wake of its planned divestiture of its media properties, is such a booming industry that sales nationwide are expected to
reach almost $900 billion by 2001, according to the Direct Marketing Association Inc.
In Texas alone last year, direct marketing accounted for $79.7 billion in sales and revenue. It also accounted for 1.3 million jobs, according to the DMA.
"It is a fast-growing part of the media business," said Richard Hochhauser, chairman of the New York-based DMA, in a telephone interview Thursday.
