WASHINGTON _ Al Gore's comedy shtick during 1996 campaign stops was to mock his stiff personality by dancing a parody version of the Macarena. Crowds guffawed when Gore stood stock still.

But nobody was laughing, least of all the embattled vice president, when Gore tried to gab his way past his role in Bill Clinton's campaign money mess.

No more the passive, rigid Gore who usually stands ramrod stiff in Clinton's shadow. No more frozen Macarena.

I've only seen Gore this animated three times _ in the CNN debate when he devastated Ross Perot and in veep debates against Dan Quayle and Jack Kemp.

Clearly Gore felt he was fighting ...
