The White House is the residence, temporarily, of the president and his family. It is also the people's house, the pinnacle of American leadership and democracy and a symbol of the nation's values and aspirations.
Countless millions have visited the White House as tourists. As a small boy growing up in Washington many years ago, through both teachers and friends, I came to view the White House as the nation's house. I was pleased years later when my two sons, both young at the time, got to visit it as tourists.
