1844: Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, a group of 28 weavers, opens a cooperative store. Its Rochdale Principles will become the basic operating principles for co-ops around the world.
1846-48: Famine in Germany, other issues prompt both Friedrich Raiffeisen and F. Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch to organize cooperative enterprises, including "people's banks."
