Motivation for engaging in physical activity has been a central research topic in sport and exercise science. Of primary interest is the development of conceptual models that delineate factors which facilitate and enhance motivation levels in physical activity involvement. Of the various theoretical models used to study motivation, Deci and Ryan's (1985, 1991) self-determination theory offers a unique framework for understanding multifaceted motivational orientations. Specifically, this model suggests that three classes of motives underlie any behavioral engagement: intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation.
