WASHINGTON -- For the past 20 years or so, Alaskans have been trying to decide what to do with the North Slope's estimated 35 Tcf of marketable gas.

First they considered plans to export it by pipeline, possibly via British Columbia.

More recently, the idea has been to sell it as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

And yet a third possible solution has been suggested -- using gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology to turn it into middle distillates or gasoline.

A study released last week concludes that an LNG scheme could be within reach if producers lower costs and the federal and state government offer incentives.
