NEW YORK - While research suggests that DHEA can provide users with everything from enhanced memory to an improved sex drive, many medical experts remain skeptical about the nutritional supplement.
DHEA, the acronym for dehydroepiandrosterone, is a hormone produced by the body's adrenal glands, which are located just above the kidneys. Although it had been available by prescription for some time, the substance became available over the counter just in the past year.
The DHEA pills available to consumers are made by extracting sterols from wild yams. DHEA is produced by cleaving a few side chains from diosgenin, the most common of those sterols.
