Fat lies: researchers uncover the inaccuracies of electronic body fat analyzers.

Researchers have the skinny on electronic body fat analyzers-they are not precise. In a study sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH), scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently found that the results from electronic instruments designed to estimate body fat vary widely from known standards.

Such tools, known as bioelectrical impedance analyzers (BIAs), are in routine use by health clubs, hospitals, athletes, dieters and dialysis clinicians to obtain body fat estimates. They are quick, simple, noninvasive and relatively inexpensive.
