On Oct. 22, 1929, the Worcester Telegram ran a headline on its financial page:

STOCK MARKET COLLAPSE.

But the story didn't make it to the front page.

The next day after a brief rally on Wall Street, the newspaper tried to be cheery. "Brisk Recovery Develops," "Government Undisturbed by Stock Market" and "Financiers Swing Stocks Into Rally" were typical headlines.
