A former train driver revealed this week that in his 45- year-long career, trains under his control had been involved in 44 fatal accidents involving both pedestrians and motorists at level crossings.
Gauteng-based Ras Esterhuizen, who still relives these terrible nightmares, is determined to change things.
He has become part of a campaigning group of former and current train drivers who aim to raise awareness nationally about the dangers of level crossings and the number of unnecessary accidents throughout South Africa.
In the past two weeks alone at least six people have been killed in level crossing accidents.
