* Benazir Bhutto, leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). Benazir Bhutto inherited the PPP mantle from her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Eight years after becoming Pakistan's first civilian president, Zulfikar was executed for murder in 1978. Benazir returned from exile in 1986 and gained considerable political support, holding rallies throughout the country. Her party won 93 of the 207 directly elected National Assembly seats in the general election of 1988 and Benazir became president.
