Mar. 24--Busy signals at America Online have been generating a torrent of new customers for small companies in southeast Michigan that provide access to the Internet.
Good news, right? Maybe.
All these new customers also are attracting communications heavyweights like Ameritech, AT&T and Microsoft.
Some Internet experts estimate that more than 250,000 people in southeast Michigan regularly cruise the Internet. Three years ago, only one-tenth that many surfed the World Wide Web, the portion of the Internet that features graphics, photos, audio and video.
