The Bush administration dealt a blow to the gray wolf Tuesday - and to Oregonians who yearn for this magnificent animal's long-term revival in this state.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that gray wolves in the Northern Rockies, as well as eastern Oregon and Washington and the western Great Lakes, will be removed from the federal endangered species list by late February.

It's the latest attempt to strip Endangered Species Act protection for the wolves after a controversial two-decade effort to re-establish their populations. A previous effort failed last year after a federal judge blocked the move, saying ...
