Rio Tinto Alcan to slash 1,100 jobs

London, Jan 20 (PTI) -- Mining giant Rio Tinto group firm Rio Tinto Alcan will trim 1,100 jobs as the entity explores cost cutting measures to tackle the global economic turmoil.

Rio Tinto Alcan would also be cutting six per cent of its aluminium production.

"Plans are in place to reduce the workforce by approximately 1,100 roles (300 contractors and 800 employee roles).

In addition, substantial cost reduction programmes are being implemented across all Rio Tinto Alcan facilities," the company which has its head office in Montreal, Canada said in a statement.
