Mar. 21--In the end, Delta Air Lines chose a reliable old friend from Seattle over a new suitor from France.

The Atlanta-based airline on Thursday laid out details of a long-range deal to buy up to 644 jets from Boeing Co., which kept European rival Airbus Industrie from winning any of Delta's business.

"Boeing won on all the critical points," said Delta Chairman Ronald W. Allen in announcing the 20-year pact, which initially involves 106 planes worth $6.7 billion, with options to buy 538 more. It was Delta's first major aircraft order since the late 1980s.
