THE North East recorded the lowest disclosed deal values in more than 15 years in 2008 at [pounds sterling]510m compared with [pounds sterling]3.4bn in 2007.

Even after adjusting the 2007 values to eliminate Barratt s [pounds sterling]2.1bn acquisition of Wilson Bowden, deal values fell more than 60%. Deal activity, however, showed a slight increase with 195 transactions completed compared with 190 in 2007.

During the first quarter the number of transactions was buoyed as vendors pushed to complete before the withdrawal of capital gains tax taper relief at the end of the tax year.
