My favorite saying about ammunition came from one of the most combat-experienced men on the planet. He was born in a central Asian nomadic tribe which refused to be "collectivized" by the Soviets or exterminated by the Red Chinese. His people were hunted almost to extinction. He had been killing communists fervently and ferociously for about 50 years when I met him.

Over a small bright fire in a huge dark cave, he cheerfully advised, "try to never run out of smokes, ammo and luck, all at the same time." Laughing, he added, "and remember this: if you have ammo, you can get more smokes--and make your own luck!"
