NEW YORK -- Denim mills say they're close to curing their excess inventory headache, but they've got a host of other problems yet to deal with.
After the bottom dropped out of denim's bull market last summer, mills were whipsawed by a combination of bumper inventories and cutbacks by apparel manufacturers, and have spent the better part of the past 10 months trying to work off excess inventories by cutting prices, curtailing production and rejiggering strategic plans.
Executives for the most part are confident they'll return to more normal levels of operations in the second and third quarters of the year.
