DALTON, Ga. -- Tufted rugs are getting more space in major retail stores, judging by a recent shopping trip to Wal-Mart, Kmart, Home Depot and Lowe's units in Dalton, Ga., the epicenter of American tufting.
Kmart and Wal-Mart devoted nearly half of their rug department space to tufted area rugs, compared to a quarter or less last year.
In both stores, the tufted area rugs flowed out of the space devoted to tufted bath and accent rugs. In some cases, large and small rugs coordinated with one another.
At these stores, the colors were limited to a narrow spectrum of hunter green, cranberry, Williamsburg blue, pink, and a few neutrals such as off-white ...
