US military commanders are drawing up plans for a faster withdrawal of American troops from Iraq in anticipation that President-elect Barack Hussein Obama will reject current proposals as too slow. The current proposals are based on the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the US and Iraq which was signed on Dec. 14 by out-going President George W. Bush, who was then on a farewell visit to Baghdad, and Prime Minister (PM) Nuri al-Maleki.
The positions of Bush, a Republican, and new Democratic President Obama concerning Iraq are different. For the Bush administration, the SOFA was only to be the beginning of a phase in the US presence in this country and ...
