It's been a decade since Calgary Opera mounted a production of Gounod's Faust, and the company's fourth this fall played to full and enthusiastic audiences. This new, homegrown product adds further luster to the reputations of designers Harry Frehner and Scott Reid, both long active on the Calgary opera scene.

The unit set consists of a large, semi-circular staircase that rotates as needed for the various scenes and can be transformed into many things with the aid of inventive projections on the wall behind. Abstract in concept, the set works best for the later part of the opera, where the situations are more intimate and focused. ...
