DEMAND for gas for local electricity and industry is rising by 15 to 20 per cent a year in Abu Dhabi, faster than oil, and is expected to reach 6,000 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) in 2009, compared to 100 mmcfd in 1980. Abu Dhabi in 2008 produced about 5,000 mmcfd of gas.

A programme, for which Stone and Webster of the US has done the feasibility, has been launched to install a gas network to serve the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain and other parts of the emirate.
