Across the Atlantic Ocean, menacing storms were lined up and headed for the U.S mainland. The storms, some quickly developing into strong hurricanes were given names--Gustav, Hanna, Ike and Josephine--and evacuations were ordered along their expected paths.

At the DAV Washington Headquarters, National Service Director Randy Reese and his staff set up a "war room" to track the storms and position National Service Officers (NSOs) with disaster relief vouchers to relieve the hardship the storms wreaked on disabled veterans living in their path.
