So how big was the recent breach at Heartland Payment Systems Inc. really?
The Princeton, N.J., processor has not said, though some media reports estimated that it could eventually exceed the massive breach at TJX Cos. Inc., which exposed 94 million card accounts. These estimates were based on Heartland's monthly volume of about 100 million transactions not accounts and the fact that the virus used in the incident could have been running on its systems for several months.
