CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Sometimes, an idea is so obvious yet so revolutionary that it makes you want to slap your forehead.
Dr. William Thomas' Eden Alternative is one of those. His premise, in a nutshell, is this:
Nursing homes should treat residents as people who need care, not just patients who need treatment. Companionship, variety and stimulation are more important than prescription drugs. And it makes more sense to fill homes with pets, plants and children than to have sterile halls and perfectly regimented days.
