The Arabian Nights
This image, Sinbad Plots Against the Giant, was conceived as an illustration for an edition of The Arabian Nights published in 1906. It shows Sinbad and his comrades planning their escape from a giant which has roasted and eaten one of them each night. The colossal ogre is curled in slumber, but his enormous scale gives gravity to Sinbad's situation. The giant, with his long arms and hands, and immense head, threatens to tumble down over Sinbad, making him dangerous even in his sleep.
